Sweden is minimalistic

idn sweden is minimalistic

"Overloaded design can be both boring and distracting, while minimalism’s ability to cut to the chase gives it a decided commercial edge. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry defined the style as being “not when there is nothing more to add, but when there’s nothing left to take away”."

"Clean, unfussy, functional, minimalist... these are the kind of adjectives that would spring to most people's mind when the subject of Swedish design is raised."

In the latest issue of IdN, v17n6: Minimalism Issue, you find lot of Swedish creatives from varies fields. Really cool to see what's going on in the neighborhoods;

— Oskar Kron Design (Stockholm, Sweden)
"I find it interesting how typography can set a tone or convey a message in the way it is treated rather than what it necessarily says. It’s a bit like a bolt, it just holds everything together."

— Anneli Olander (Stockholm, Sweden)
— Chevychase (Stockholm, Sweden)
— Diftype (Umeå, Sweden)
— Slobodan Zivic (Stockholm, Sweden)
— Bergen (Stockholm, Sweden)
— Daniel Carlsten (Stockholm, Sweden)
— Dalston Creative (Stockholm, Sweden)
— RBG6 (Stockholm, Sweden)
— BVD (Stockholm, Sweden)
— Patrik Lindell (Stockholm, Sweden)

More minimalistic stuff here.

Meeting with Celia Calle

celia calle

Last week I was in New York for some interesting meetings and for the launch of our LG project (more about that later). I have been in contact with the great illustrator Celia Calle for many many years and now, finally I had a chance to meet her in NYC one night. We had a lot of interesting discussions over some wine. She encouraged me to start illustrate again and she was also so kind to give me her new book and one of her lovely prints (which fits my Designchapel very well :).

She made fun of me when I had so hard to find time for our date because of the LG launch.

Earlier this week Creative Summit (a VIP event, open only for 150 delegates) took place in Skellefteå. It is an event operated by The Lodge, a creative hub consisting of prolific Skellefteå-based companies working within the field of digital media.

It was some really inspiring days with Brian Solis, Peter Espersen (Lego), Peter Engel (Zentropia) and Teenage Engineering among others. If you want to read about it, a great sum up is made here by Filmarc:

The Mill's "Apples" — Amazing use of an iPhone and a custom tracking rig together with CGI

The Wired Tablet App — A video demonstration from Wired and their thoughts.
Mag+ — Nice research project from Bonnier R&D. And great move to launch it a week before iPad :)

Nitendo Facetracking — This is cool. 3D combined with facetracking on a DS. I think we will see lot of this in the future.
3D Face Technology — Little old footage taken from Japanese TV. But still very good!

“And Then There Was Salsa” — Very cool Vimeo takeover!
Macro Kingdom — 5DmarkII and a MP-E 65mm lens. Amazing!
Rhonda — A new cool way to draw stuff in 3D.

OK Go "This Too Shall Pass" — A really cool music video by James Frost.

130 tracks for a creative day at work

a-creative-day-at-work-fixad

I have always enjoyed listen to music meanwhile I work creative, specially when I'm sitting at the office or at coffee shops. For me it's so important that I can shut down everything around me to find my creative mood, my creative "capsule".

Here is my playlist on Spotify for you who also like to work with easy listening music: Designchapel — A creative day at work

January 25, 2010 - Comments Off on Inspiration: TED & Sagmeister

Inspiration: TED & Sagmeister

” TED is a small nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design.”

During my last vacation I brought my iPhone loaded with movies from TED.com. These short talks (3-10 min) had a big variaty of both quality but most of them are very interested listen at. Here are a few that caught my mind so far:

Stefan Sagmeister — The power of time off
”Every seven years, designer Stefan Sagmeister closes his New York studio for a yearlong sabbatical to rejuvenate and refresh their creative outlook. He explains the often overlooked value of time off and shows the innovative projects inspired by his time in Bali.”
— Very interested so hear about how they are doing at Sagmeister Inc. to keep up the creativity. I love to see people finding their own way to work because good creativity isn’t, and have never been, something you can get from a line production. Just sitting in front of your computer will never make you very successful.
From the sabbatical year Stefan found out that “Everything we designed in the seven years following the first sabbatical, had originated in that year” Of course, it is hard to do as Sagmeister Inc. if you not are very economical independent, but we can learn a lot from their thinking.

Richard St. John — 8 secrets of success
“Why do people succeed? Is it because they're smart? Or are they just lucky? Neither. Analyst Richard St. John condenses years of interviews into an unmissable 3-minute slideshow on the real secrets of success.”
— This is a very short movie about how to success in your business. Lot of humor but so so true! Check it out!

Imogen Heap — "Wait It Out"
"Imogen Heap plays a powerful stripped-down version of "Wait It Out," from her new record, Ellipse."
— I just love her!

Summer Inspiration

Microsofts Body Recognition Project — Where will this end? This system seems to be sold with every Xbox in the future.
EyePet — I think this can be huge as well! PlayStation is using the Eye camera to bring a furry pet to life in your living room.
New York Nearest Subway — An augmented Reality App for iPhone that make it easy to find your subway.
ihologram — Nice app for iPhone that gives the illusion of a 3d hologram. I think we will see lot of this kind of stuff during 2010.
Social networks are getting huge — Social networks are getting so huge that many of them are competing in size with some of the largest countries in the world.
RUSE — I just want this table to be reel! Great to see our old friend Joseph Leroux from Coca Cola Zero as one of the actors.
Samsung Magic Unboxing — When do we have these kind of boxes? Nice idea but a very cheap end on the video.
Augmented Reality — Seems to be everywhere these days.

North Kingdom goes Los Angeles (Siggraph 2008)

siggraph08

Mathias Lindgren and I went to Los Angeles and Siggraph 2008 (short for Special Interest Group on GRAPHics and Interactive Techniques) to check out the worlds leading computer graphics (CG) conference. As an Art Director I think it is very important to know what is going on out there, and Mathias, who are our 3D artist, to find new techniques and methods. Great inspiration when you need to find cutting edge solutions for different projects!

One of the best speakers was Tippet Studios who talked about how they did “Cloverfield”. We was amazed by their engagement and how they have used their creativity in the technical level. We also saw lot of great Behind-The-Scene speakers showing stuff from movies like ”The Mummy”, ”Indiana Jones, ”The Hulk”, ”Speed Racer”, ”Iron Man”, ”Narnia”, ”Wall-E”, The X-Files_ I Want to Belive” and ”The Golden Compass”.

Beckmans inspire!

Kenny Lindström and I went to the final exhibitions of Stockholm design schools this spring. We visited Forsbergs, Beckmans, Berghs and Konstfack.

It was very inspiring and it was also very surprising to see how big different it was between the quality of the four exhibitions. Beckmans was in my eyes the absolute top school this spring! Both the exhibition itself and the work of the students were very professional!

Allan Lundström, my uncle & my guru

al_anderstorp-juli-1984_foto-lennart-lundstrom.jpgallan.jpg

Allan was a lovely friend, a big expert and the one I always looked up to! He was absolute brilliant within photography, painting, sculpturing and poetry. He was a perfectionist and could talk about a grey scale in his photography for hours. Allan died the summer of 2005, only 58 years old. A very big tragedy for us all. You will always be a big part of our lives! We will always remember you!

North Kingdom goes Montreal (Journée Grafika & ADAPT 06)

x3.jpg

We visited ADAPT 06 in Montreal this autumn with some of the best digital artist in the world. I had the chance to see some of Hollywood´s best digital artists showcase the techniques behind their works in 2D & 3D.
The main reason of why I was in Montreal that week was because I where speaker at Journée Grafika, a web/design conference. At the conference we met Sid Lee (also speakers) who invited us to there office. They are the guys behind the magnificent MGM Grand site. Cloudraker was another nice agency we met and visited.

syd2.jpg

At ADAPT 06 I met a legend; my new topp favourite artist; Syd Maed! He has been designing futuristic concepts for corporations and the movies (including Blade Runner, Tron and Mission Impossible 3) since the '60s. He is making "retro future" in a way I have not seen anywhere else, and he does not even use the computer!

grnr1.jpg

Another great artist I had the chance to see was Mark Goerner! Stunning work from one who has make concept drawings for Minority Report, X-Men 2 and Superman Returns. Mark is currently working on James Cameron´s Battle Angel to be released in 2009.

Thierry Doizon gave a lecture in speed painting and I can just say "WOW!". His team was demonstrating the use of custom brushes and team work. Just f***ing amazing what they could make by drawing for 1,5 hour.

Some other really great artists I had the chance to see; Dylan Cole, Christian Lorenz Scheurer, James Clyne and Sebastien Larroude.
